18ct Victorian emerald rubies old cut diamonds and pearls bug necklace on chain
« backThis is a most wonderful piece of Victorian jewellery. Victorians were fascinated with animal jewellery and this is such an example.
This bug is beautifully made.
In full flight the open wings are set with quality old cut diamonds, approx. .75ct minimum and four bright red rubies. The top part of the body is a rectangular clean glistening Columbian emerald measuring approx.1 - 1 1/4 carat. The eyes are rubies. The bottom part of the body is set with a full baroque pearl and backed. This pearl is most probably natural as cultured pearls hadn't been invented at that point.
The bug measures 5 cm x 3 cm
The weight is 10.2 grams
Suspended on an antique gold chain measuring 19 1/2 inches.
A superb piece for any collector. c. 1880
