The B J. of the business, myself, has been a dealer in fine antique jewellery for almost thirty years, starting out in London in the mid 70's when the antique business was booming and I learnt my craft through sheer experience and had shops laterly specialising in antique jewellery.. Undoubtedly my jewellery descriptions are based on a long career and I do have a genuine love for antique jewellery because There is just something undeniably magnetic about Antique & Estate jewellery. The Turn-of-the-Last Century Era, Edwardian - early ART DECO, produced some of the finest jewellery ever . Known for its craftsmanship, attention to detail, and fine quality materials used, it is highly revered by collectors today. Original Antique Victorian Period jewellery is quickly disappearing on the market today. Relatively few pieces have survived in good condition over the years and many only exist in private collections at this point in time.
♦How Do We know an Item is Antique or Vintage?
Many naturally want assurance that an item is of the age and specifications.
It is all about evaluating the many relevant facts of the piece of jewellery and then putting them together in context within the history of jewellery. Facts that lead to dating and authenticating may include the techniques employed in the metal-smithing and construction, what materials that are used, what gems and gem cuts are employed, the types of settings for the stones, the aesthetics and overall design and also condition and wear.
All of these factors are then placed into a framework within the history of antique jewellry., each fact should be consistent with precedence in the past, other known examples whether in museums and books and also accepted norms.
Thus we date and authenticate a piece of jewellery. It is a vast subject and so much is written to help.
